The City of Long Beach’s Black Infant Health Program aims to address the problem of poor birth outcomes affecting African American women and their infants by encouraging a commitment to self-love and healthy living through group intervention and individual client services. Their goal is to increase healthy birth outcomes and ultimately improve survival rates for African American infants and mothers. (Program Website)
The Black Infant Health Program and the PRO-Health Research Program have collaborated on several community-based research initiatives including our prenatal health needs assessment in Los Angeles county named the Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies Project / Proyecto Mamás Saludables, Bebés Saludables. We have also worked together on three community-based health interventions, including a randomized clinical trial testing the efficacy of a prenatal stress management program named SMART Moms / Mamás LÍSTAS, an exercise intervention Active Moms / Mamás Activas designed for low-income mothers, and the stress management program Destined for Greatness that was culturally tailored to reduce stress and promote healthy behaviors among African-American mothers and their children.
